Breast Milk the Gold Standard

The NCHD WIC Program recognizes breastfeeding as the ideal nutrition for infants and children. The Healthy People 2010 goal is to improve breastfeeding rates to 75% of infants at hospital discharge. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first year and then for as long as mutually desired by mother and child.

Through breastfeeding promotion, education and support to health care providers, WIC staff and the community, the NCHD is working to achieve these goals. The NCHD WIC has an International Board Certified Consultant on staff.

Whether you are a new or expecting mom, if you are on this section of this web site, you are probably interested in giving your baby the best care you can. Or maybe you are the partner or a family member of a breastfeeding mom and would like to learn more about breastfeeding. You have come to the right place!
